Caliber: .38 S&W
Action Type: Double Action Only Revolver with Top Break Opening Barrel

Barrel Length: The barrel is 6” in length with a full length top rib.
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a half-round blade pinned in the top rib. The rear sight is a U” notch in the top of the frame that protrudes through a rectangular hole in the top strap.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are black checkered hard rubber with S&W logos at the tops of the grips. There are a few light marks in the smooth borders of the grips with a few small dings at the bottom edge of the right grip. The checkering shows light to moderate even wear with a mar in the right grip at the front of the grip screw. The grips rate in about Fine condition.
Type of Finish: The finish is nickel plated with a blued trigger guard and barrel latch, and a case colored trigger.
Finish Originality: The finish is original.
Bore Condition: The bore is bright with light wear in the rifling. There is very light erosion in the grooves at the middle of the bore – none near the muzzle.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 75% of its metal finish. There are a several spots of surface loss scattered over the barrel, cylinder and the right side of the frame, with dark eroded metal showing through. There is also very light pinprick surface erosion sprinkled over the right side of the frame and the left sideplate. The cylinder and trigger guard show thinning in their finish. There are a few very light handling marks scattered over the barrel and the sides of the frame. The cylinder does not have a drag line. The knurling on the grip safety shows light wear. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. Overall, this revolver rates in about Fine condition as re-finished.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly and the ejector works properly. There is an almost non-perceptible amount of play in the cylinder lockup but the barrel lockup is solid. We did not fire this handgun.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: This is a Smith & Wesson Model .38 Safety Hammerless 3rd Model top break revolver known as the “Lemon Squeezer”. It is hammerless with a grip safety, checkered hard rubber grips and a 6” barrel. However, the serial number on the top strap doesn’t match the number on the frame and cylinder, indicating the barrel may have been replaced. The revolver is in about Fine condition with 75% of its original nickel finish remaining. There are spots of surface loss on the barrel, cylinder and the right side of the frame, with dark eroded metal showing through. There is also very light pinprick surface erosion sprinkled over the right side of the frame and the left sideplate. The cylinder and trigger guard show thinning in their finish. The grips show a few small marks with light to moderate even wear in the checkering that shows a mar in the right grip. The bore is bright with light wear in the rifling. There is very light erosion in the center of the bore, which is quite odd, because we usually see it at the muzzle and perhaps the breech. The barrel lockup is solid and while the cylinder lockup shows a tiny amount of play, it is as good as we have seen on several modern revolvers that were practically new in the box. This version of the Lemon Squeezer was made with a barrel latch directly behind the top strap, which is pushed down to release the barrel, which becomes somewhat awkward since the barrel latch is part of the top strap. It wasn’t until the 4th Model came out that the barrel latch was moved to the sides of the top strap and were lifted up to release the barrel. The 1st through 3rd models were all antiques and are the most collectable of the safety hammerless models. This is a very nice looking pistol for its age and is sure to catch the eyes of the collectors out there.
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This Antique handgun can be transferred/sold in California. All cartridge firing handguns (even C&R's and antiques) sold to a California resident must be DROS'd. This does not apply to out of state residents.

The Smith & Wesson Safety Hammerless or Smith & Wesson New Departure (nicknamed by collectors as the Lemon Squeezer) is a double-action revolver that was produced from 1887 to 1940 by Smith & Wesson. Based on the Smith & Wesson Model 2 double-action design, the revolver incorporated an internal hammer and an external grip safety on its back-strap. It was chambered in .32 S&W and .38 S&W calibers; these revolvers were cancelled prior to World War II, being eclipsed by the stronger hand ejector models.

The Smith & Wesson .38 Safety Hammerless models were produced from 1887 (1888 for the 32) to just before World War II. They were chambered in either .32 S&W or .38 S&W with a five-shot cylinder. They were most often produced with a 2-inch, 3-inch, or 3.5-inch barrels; but some 6' barrelled versions are known to exist.[1]

These top-break revolvers were designed for fast reloading and concealed carry as the hammer was internal and would not snag on drawing the revolver from a pocket. They were known as 'The New Departure' to reflect the company's new approach to designing revolvers.[1]

Minor design changes were made to these revolvers over the years, resulting in several different design models, as termed by collectors. The first model was manufactured between 1887-1902. The .38 was based on S&W's medium frame, while the .32 was based on the smaller sized '1½' frame.[2][3]

In 1952 the safety hammerless concept was applied to Smith & Wesson's J-frame. The finished product became the Model 40 and 42 chambered in .38 Special and is alternately known as the Smith & Wesson Centennial as it was produced in the 100th anniversary of the founding of Smith & Wesson.[1][4] While few competitors replicated the grip safety, the internal hammer or 'hammerless' design proved popular with other manufacturers such as Iver Johnson and Harrington & Richardson. The Centennial (without grip safeties) are still made by S&W, and have been copied by other revolver manufacturers.[1]
